Laos hands down has one of the most beautiful, diverse and shocking market culture. Vendors place a lot of thought into the presentation of their products, vegetables delicately bundled with bamboo ties devoid of any specks of dirt, steamed coconut sticky rice folded and crimped in banana leaf packets, fresh fish expertly cleaned… Laos also has a strong culture of resourcefulness and general scrappiness, eating just about anything they find in the forest or rivers. This can be a tough thing to confront in the market seeing everything from skinned sparrows, bbqed rat, insects, river weed and snakes.
Luang Prabang’s Morning Market gets going as early as 4am and runs into late morning. These are just some snaps of an average day’s offerings.
